Active Fires

The U.S. is battling 97 large fires across 3.5 million acres as of August 8, with Oregon and Washington shouldering the heaviest burden in what is shaping up to be one of the worst fire seasons on record.

With 95 large fires burning and national resources fully committed at Preparedness Level 5, the Pacific Northwest leads the nation in active fire count — Oregon has 29, Washington 18, Idaho 7.

The Pacific Northwest is at Preparedness Level 5 with 44 uncontained large fires across Oregon and Washington. Oregon has shattered historical acreage records while Washington has seen 65,000-plus residents displaced and hundreds of structures destroyed.

The Pacific Northwest is ground zero for the worst wildfire siege in the nation, with 49 uncontained large fires burning across Oregon and Washington as of August 5, 2026, and more than 28,700 personnel deployed nationally.

The Little Giant Fire northwest of Leavenworth has grown to over 24,000 acres with zero containment, prompting Level 3 'Go Now' evacuation orders in Chelan County as crews focus on protecting homes along the White River corridor.

The Big Grass Fire has grown to 303,285 acres on the Oregon-Idaho border, triggering a disaster emergency declaration, Idaho National Guard deployment, and Level 3 evacuations across Owyhee County.

Washington state's Kaiser Canyon Fire on the Colville Reservation has grown to over 129,000 acres at 27% containment, making it the largest active fire in the state. Washington is battling 12 large fires with more than 378,000 acres burned statewide so far in 2026.

Eighty-five large fires are burning nationally as the Northwest remains at Preparedness Level 5, with 43 uncontained large fires in Oregon and Washington alone. Over 4.66 million acres have burned across the U.S. in 2026, well above the 10-year average.

Oregon leads the nation with 31 large active fires as the Northwest Geographic Area remains at National Preparedness Level 5. A total of 84 large fires are burning nationally, consuming more than 2.6 million acres.

Oregon is experiencing one of its most destructive wildfire seasons on record, with more than 1.5 million acres actively burning across 32 large fires as of July 28, 2026, straining resources and forcing thousands to evacuate.

The National Interagency Fire Center is at its maximum Preparedness Level 5 as 51 uncontained large fires rage across the Pacific Northwest, with Oregon alone hosting 10 active large incidents and Washington reporting four more.

A fast-moving grass fire that ignited July 23 along the Oregon-Idaho border near Jordan Valley has exploded to approximately 280,000 acres, making it one of the largest fires burning in the United States. The blaze remains just 5% contained.
