Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide public health emergency on August 7 specifically due to wildfire smoke, joining communities already reeling from evacuation orders and structure losses.

Off-the-Charts Readings in Central Washington

The most extreme air quality readings of the season were recorded in the Wenatchee Valley. On August 5, monitoring stations in Leavenworth recorded Air Quality Index (AQI) values above 849 โ€” nearly seven times the traditional AQI maximum of 500, which marks the boundary between "hazardous" and off-scale readings. Portland Among World's Most Polluted Cities

Portland experienced its own air quality crisis in early August, with a monitoring station in Post, Oregon โ€” about 20 miles southeast of the city โ€” registering a hazardous 460 AQI reading. Portland's readings placed it among the worst air quality of any major city globally during that period, according to OPB reporting.

Spokane, Washington, recorded an AQI of 210 on the morning of August 5, qualifying as "Very Unhealthy" and prompting an Air Quality Alert. AccuWeather's air quality maps showed pockets of "dangerous" air quality in portions of Washington and Oregon throughout early August.

Smoke Reaches Far Beyond the Region

The scale of Pacific Northwest fire smoke was so vast it drifted well beyond the region. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued an air quality advisory through August 6, citing smoke from Pacific Northwest wildfires. NASA's Worldview image archive documented the smoke blanketing Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia simultaneously in early August.

Protecting Yourself from Wildfire Smoke

Health officials are urging all residents in smoke-affected areas to take smoke exposure seriously, especially for sensitive groups including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with heart or lung conditions. Key protective measures include:

  • Stay indoors with windows and doors closed when AQI exceeds 150.
  • Use air purifiers with HEPA filters to reduce indoor particulate levels.
  • Wear an N95 or KN95 mask if you must go outside โ€” surgical and cloth masks offer minimal protection from fine particles.
  • Avoid vigorous outdoor activity even at "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" levels (AQI 101-150).
  • Monitor AirNow.gov for the latest AQI readings in your area.
