The Summit Creek Fire burning in Idaho's Sawtooth National Forest southeast of Oakley has reached 1,741 acres and approximately 62% containment as of June 4, 2026, according to the National Interagency Fire Center's daily situation report. Fire crews are patrolling containment lines, watching for hotspots, and engaging remaining fire activity as full containment is anticipated by June 7.
Fire Origin and Spread
The fire ignited on May 25 in rugged terrain approximately 11 miles southeast of Oakley and north of City of Rocks National Reserve in Cassia County. Early containment efforts were hampered by steep topography and dry conditions, but firefighters made steady progress through the final days of May.
Earlier reports from KMVT in Twin Falls showed the fire was at 1,438 acres and 53% contained as of June 1, indicating additional spread in the days following before containment lines were firmed up. Officials now have the fire at 62% contained on the latest NIFC figures, with full containment projected for June 7.
Resource Assignments
The U.S. Forest Service, which manages the Sawtooth National Forest, has led the suppression effort. Crews have been focusing on mopping up interior hotspots and reinforcing perimeter lines. No structures were reported destroyed in the most recent updates, though the fire burned through portions of forest and rangeland in the rugged southern Idaho terrain.
Broader Idaho Fire Threat
The Summit Creek Fire is one of several fire incidents Idaho agencies have been monitoring this season. Officials with the Idaho Department of Lands and U.S. Forest Service have warned publicly that the state is primed for a significant fire season.
"One spark can quickly become a wildfire," officials cautioned in a recent briefing, pointing to the combination of record-low snowpack, an exceptionally warm and dry spring, and cured grasses and brush across much of the state's lower elevations.
Idaho Capital Sun reporting from June 1 also noted that emergency crews faced difficulties during at least one residential evacuation earlier in the season, with challenges verifying whether all occupants had safely left. No casualties were confirmed.
What's Next
Fire managers with the Sawtooth National Forest are expected to continue mop-up operations through the week. Residents in the Oakley area are advised to monitor local updates and remain prepared to respond to any evacuation orders should conditions change. The area around City of Rocks National Reserve may see continued smoke and limited visibility as crews complete suppression work.
