The Summit Creek Fire, burning approximately 11 miles southeast of Oakley in the Sawtooth National Forest, has reached 85 percent containment as of June 5, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. The fire has grown to 1,924 acres since igniting on May 25 during a period of low humidity and drying winds in south-central Idaho.
Fire Overview
The blaze ignited about 11 miles south of Oakley and north of the City of Rocks National Reserve, quickly growing to 1,500 acres within its first 24 hours. Early mapping challenges caused containment estimates to fluctuate as crews remapped the perimeter, but firefighting resources have since made consistent progress along established control lines.
As of early June, 2,336 personnel were assigned to incidents across the nation, with the Summit Creek Fire drawing resources from the U.S. Forest Service and cooperating agencies. Recreational drone use remains prohibited in the area, as unauthorized aircraft can ground firefighting aircraft and create serious safety hazards.
Current Status and Outlook
Officials estimated the fire would reach full containment on or around June 7. Crews have been patrolling established lines, conducting mop-up operations, and monitoring for hotspots in the rugged terrain surrounding the fire perimeter. The proximity to City of Rocks National Reserve — a popular climbing and camping destination — heightened community concern during the fire's early growth phase.
