A wildfire burning on Santa Rosa Island in Channel Islands National Park has grown to 18,379 acres as of the May 22 national situation report, making it the largest active fire in the nation. The blaze, which was first reported by an aircraft on May 15, 2026, has destroyed several historic ranch buildings and burned through a grove of rare native Torrey pine trees, dealing a significant blow to one of California's most ecologically sensitive and remote landscapes.
Santa Rosa Island, one of five islands that make up Channel Islands National Park off the coast of Santa Barbara, has been closed to the public since the fire began. The National Park Service has suspended all visitor access while fire management crews work to protect remaining structures and ecologically significant areas.
Historic Buildings Destroyed
The fire has consumed several historic buildings associated with the island's ranching heritage, which dates back more than a century. The structures were part of the island's cultural landscape, which the National Park Service has worked to preserve since taking management of the island. The extent of additional losses is still being assessed.
Rare Torrey Pine Grove Burned
Among the most ecologically significant losses is the fire's passage through a native Torrey pine grove on the island. The Santa Rosa Island Torrey pine population represents one of only two naturally occurring stands of this rare conifer species in the world โ the other is at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve near San Diego. The long-term impact on this endemic population will be studied by NPS ecologists in the coming months.
Aerial Suppression Hampered by Winds
Aircraft that flew over the island to assess the potential for water drops determined that strong winds made aerial retardant and water drops ineffective, forcing incident managers to rely primarily on ground crews for suppression. Crews have been focusing on defensive space preparation around the Main Ranch Complex and the Water Canyon area on the eastern side of the fire footprint, while a separate crew works on the South Point Lighthouse area on the western side.
InciWeb reports indicate that fire managers are recognizing the fire has potential to reach Cherry Canyon, and crews are working to establish containment through direct suppression actions in the most accessible terrain.
Rescue Operation
In a dramatic development, at least one person was rescued from the island after writing an SOS message in the charred landscape โ a signal visible from aircraft. The island had been evacuated of staff and visitors, but the individual had remained stranded as the fire spread.
Monitoring the Fire
Updates on the Santa Rosa Island Fire can be found on InciWeb at inciweb.wildfire.gov/cacnp-santa-rosa-island-fire. The National Park Service is providing regular updates on park closures and conditions at nps.gov/chis. Smoke from the fire has been visible from the Santa Barbara County coast and may affect air quality in coastal communities under certain wind conditions.
