There will be no early end to fire season in the Pacific Northwest this year. The National Interagency Fire Center's September through December predictive services outlook, released earlier this month, paints a sobering picture for the region: above-normal potential for large wildfires is expected to persist across most of the Northwest, far northern California, and central and southern Idaho through at least the end of 2026.
Why the Risk Remains High
The prolonged elevated risk is driven by a combination of factors that have compounded throughout the summer:
- Extreme drought: Much of the Pacific Northwest entered the 2026 fire season in severe to exceptional drought, and months of heat and minimal precipitation have deepened moisture deficits in forest and rangeland fuels.
- Rapid fuel recovery and re-ignition: For the Great Basin's northwest half, NIFC notes a troubling pattern of fire activity rapidly resuming after every brief dry spell, even when modest precipitation briefly raises fuel moisture. Fuels are so depleted that they dry out quickly.
- Warmer-than-normal temperatures: Record-breaking heat this summer has accelerated evapotranspiration and stressed vegetation across the region.
- Late-season wind events: September and October in the Pacific Northwest can bring powerful offshore wind events β similar to California's Diablo and Santa Ana winds β that can rapidly spread fires under seemingly moderate fire weather conditions.
Current Fire Weather Conditions
As of September 17, NIFC reports that dry west-to-northwest winds are producing elevated fire conditions across portions of the northern and central Rockies and adjacent High Plains, with gusts of 40β50 mph and minimum relative humidity values of 8β25 percent. These conditions are particularly dangerous because they combine low moisture with high wind velocity, allowing fires to spread rapidly and making aerial operations difficult or impossible.
In southern Oregon and central Idaho, scattered showers and thunderstorms associated with an upper-level low-pressure system are expected today. While the precipitation may provide temporary relief on some fire edges, dry lightning is a concern β new fire starts from lightning strikes can overwhelm initial attack resources when existing large fires are already absorbing personnel and equipment.
A Changing Fire Season Calendar
The NIFC outlook's warning that elevated risk extends through December reflects a broader shift in the West's fire season. What was once a predictable June-through-September window has stretched dramatically in recent years, with significant fire events now occurring in every month of the year across parts of the region. Fall fires β driven by east wind events in the Cascades and Siskiyous β can be particularly damaging because they often strike communities in lower-elevation zones that have not historically been considered high fire risk.
What This Means for Residents
Homeowners and communities in fire-prone areas should not assume the worst of the season is over:
- Maintain defensible space around structures β trim vegetation, clear gutters, and move combustibles away from buildings
- Know your evacuation routes and have a go-bag ready with essential supplies, medications, and documents
- Register for your county's emergency alert system to receive evacuation warnings
- Follow burn restrictions: most counties and public land units in the Pacific Northwest still have fire prevention orders in effect that restrict or prohibit open burning
- Report new fire starts immediately: call 911 or your state forestry agency's fire reporting line
