Residents across several eastern Washington counties are under evacuation orders or warnings this week as multiple wildfires burn simultaneously through the region. From Okanogan County in the north to Columbia County in the southeast, fire officials are urging swift compliance with evacuation notices as conditions remain volatile.
Kartar Fire Area β Okanogan County
Level 3 (Go Now!) evacuation notices remain in effect for homes along Kartar Valley Road, Omak Lake Road, and Columbia River Road in Okanogan County as the combined Kartar/Omak Lake Fire complex burns approximately 8,000 acres. Residents in these zones are directed to leave immediately and avoid the area. Emergency crews are actively responding in the evacuation zone, and roads in the area are subject to closures. Residents can find evacuation zone information through the Okanogan County Emergency Management office.
Upriver Fire Area β Spokane
Evacuation levels near the Upriver Fire have been progressively downgraded from the initial Level 3 orders that displaced more than 11,000 people. As of Sunday, June 21, Level 1 (Be Ready) notices remain in effect for portions of the fire perimeter east of Spokane. Residents in Level 1 zones should prepare go-bags, gather medications and important documents, and be prepared to leave on short notice. The Spokane Regional Emergency Communications office is the authoritative source for current zone assignments.
Tucannon Fire Area β Columbia County
State Fire Mobilization was authorized for the Tucannon Fire near Dayton following Level 3 evacuation orders issued for the immediate fire area. The fire has since reached 50 percent containment and evacuation levels have been reduced in some areas. However, crews continue monitoring for potential reactivation, and some Level 2 (Be Set) zones may remain in effect. Columbia County Fire District 3 and Columbia County Emergency Management are coordinating resident communications.
What Evacuation Levels Mean
- Level 1 β Be Ready: Be aware of the danger. Be prepared to leave. Monitor local media and official channels closely.
- Level 2 β Be Set: Be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. Gather your family, pets, and essential belongings. Be ready to go immediately.
- Level 3 β Go Now!: Leave immediately. Do not delay to gather belongings or wait for more information. This is a life-safety directive.
Resources and Shelters
The American Red Cross Northwest Region has established emergency shelters for displaced residents. Those evacuating should bring medications, important documents, cell phone chargers, extra clothing, and food and water for at least 72 hours. Livestock owners in fire-affected areas should have trailers ready and pre-arranged destinations for animals. Contact your county fairgrounds or local agricultural extension office for large-animal evacuation resources.
Residents throughout eastern Washington β even those not currently under evacuation orders β should take this opportunity to prepare go-bags and review evacuation routes. The 2026 fire season is tracking well above average for both fire starts and acreage burned.
