The Kartar Fire, burning in the Colville Indian Reservation southeast of Omak, Washington, has grown to an estimated 7,500 acres as of Thursday evening, June 18, with zero percent containment. The fire, managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Colville Agency, originated from two smaller fires that merged along the banks of Omak Lake before spreading rapidly to the southeast.

Evacuation Orders

The Okanogan County Emergency Management (OCEM) issued Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation orders covering the following areas:

  • All of Kartar Valley Road
  • Columbia River Road near Omak Lake
  • The south end of Omak Lake Road

Level 3 is the highest evacuation level in Washington’s three-tier system. All residents in the affected zone have been notified and are directed to leave immediately. Approximately 120 personnel are currently assigned to the fire, working to protect threatened structures and establish containment lines.

Fire Behavior

According to the NIFC situation report, the Kartar Fire is burning through grass, timber, and brush, exhibiting moderate to active fire behavior including running, wind-driven runs, and torching. The fire’s southeast spread has pushed it toward additional residential areas and agricultural land. Firefighters are working to slow its progress while protecting structures along the fire’s perimeter.

The fire erupted during a Red Flag Warning issued Tuesday, June 16, for much of eastern Washington. Strong post-frontal winds, single-digit relative humidity values, and critically dry fuels created extreme fire spread conditions that hampered initial attack efforts.

Road Closures and Area Restrictions

Area closures are in effect around the fire perimeter to protect public safety and allow firefighting crews to work without obstruction. Residents and media are advised not to attempt access to the evacuation zones. Check with the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office for the most current boundary information.

What to Do

If you or someone you know lives in or near the affected evacuation areas:

  • Leave immediately if under Level 3 orders — do not wait
  • Take medications, important documents, pets, and go-bags
  • Follow designated evacuation routes and avoid fire areas
  • Register at the designated evacuation shelter if you need assistance

Updates on the Kartar Fire are posted by Okanogan County Emergency Management on their official social media channels. The fire is expected to remain active through the weekend as warm, dry conditions persist across north-central Washington. Residents in adjacent areas should maintain Level 1 “Be Ready” preparedness in the event that fire behavior or wind direction changes.
