Northern Idaho is dealing with its own slice of the regional wildfire crisis this week, as two fires burning in Boundary County near the small community of Copeland have drawn a significant multi-agency response. The Turner Fire and the Upper Smith Fire, both active in the forested terrain near the Kootenai River, prompted aerial firefighting operations and the deployment of structural protection resources from across the state.
The Turner Fire
The Turner Fire was reported on the evening of July 15, igniting approximately five miles south of Copeland in Boundary County. Resources from local, state, and federal jurisdictions responded rapidly, joining forces with crews already committed to the nearby Upper Smith Fire. The Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 1 β led by Incident Commander Bea Day β was assigned to manage the incident, according to InciWeb data.
The cause of the Turner Fire is listed as undetermined and under investigation. As of reporting, the fire had burned approximately 681 acres in the Northern Rockies geographic area.
Coordinated Air Attack
The response to both the Turner and Upper Smith fires has included an extensive aerial component. Large airtankers and very large airtankers (VLATs) have dropped retardant to help slow fire spread and protect structural values. Single-engine air tankers (SEATs) and helicopters have been scooping water directly from the Kootenai River to cool the fireβs edges and support interior attack.
To protect civilian watercraft and maintain safe operating corridors for the scoop planes and helicopters, authorities closed both the Copeland boat launch and the Porthill boat launch on the Kootenai River. Boaters and recreationists are asked to stay clear of these areas until further notice.
Structural Protection
The Idaho Fire Chiefs Association deployed two task forces of engines ahead of the fire to help protect structures near the fire perimeter. The proactive deployment of structural resources β positioning engines and crews at homes and outbuildings before fire arrival β is a critical tactic when fire behavior is aggressive and direct suppression alone is insufficient to hold a perimeter.
Northern Idaho Drought Context
While Idahoβs drought conditions are generally considered slightly less severe than Oregonβs, the state is still deeply stressed. According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor data, some category of drought covers 81% of Idaho, with exceptional drought β the highest designation β covering approximately 8% of the state. Roughly 23% of Idaho is in extreme drought and another 22% in severe drought.
Fuel conditions in the forests and rangeland of northern Idaho reflect this moisture deficit. Dead fine fuels are at critically low moisture levels, and even living vegetation in some locations is stressed enough to contribute to fire spread under the right wind conditions.
Broader Northern Rockies Picture
The Northern Rockies Geographic Area, which includes Idaho and portions of Montana and Wyoming, saw above-normal fire activity ease slightly earlier in the season due to a cool, wet late-June weather pattern. However, the respite was short-lived.
