A fast-moving wildfire burning approximately one mile south of Huntington in Baker County, Oregon has prompted mandatory evacuations, closed Interstate 84 in both directions, and forced the full evacuation of Farewell Bend State Park as of June 7, 2026.
Fire Size and Location
The Frontage Fire had burned over 1,500 acres as of Sunday morning. The fire is burning in grass and rangeland terrain south of Huntington along the Snake River corridor β an area known for rapid fire spread when winds pick up across the high desert terrain.
Multiple agencies are engaged in suppression efforts, including crews from the Bureau of Land Management, the Burnt River Rangeland Fire Protection Association, Huntington Fire, and the Keating Rural Fire Protection District.
Evacuation Levels
The Baker County Sheriff's Office issued tiered evacuation notices for surrounding communities:
- Level 1 β Be Ready (Farewell Bend area): Residents should be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. Have go-bags packed and livestock loaded.
- Level 2 β Be Set (Southeast Huntington): Residents should be ready to leave immediately if conditions change. Monitor official channels closely.
- Level 3 β Go Now (Farewell Bend State Park): Immediate evacuation ordered. Leave immediately β do not delay to gather belongings.
Highway Closures
The Oregon Department of Transportation confirmed that Interstate 84 is fully closed in both directions between Ontario and Baker City β from milepost 374 to milepost 302. U.S. Route 30 is also closed from milepost 3 to milepost 11.
Motorists traveling between the Treasure Valley and eastern Oregon are urged to seek alternate routes. Officials warn that wildfire conditions are unpredictable and road status may change rapidly with little notice.
What Residents Should Do
Anyone under a Level 3 evacuation order should leave immediately via safe routes and not return until officials lift the order. Residents in Level 1 and 2 areas should:
- Pack medications, documents, and irreplaceable items
- Load and move livestock to pre-identified locations
- Stay tuned to Baker County Sheriff emergency notifications and local radio
- Avoid the fire area β leave routes clear for emergency responders
